Welcome to the Envelope Challenge!
In order to set up Stripe to process your donations, we’ll need to connect your Envelope Challenge portal with your Stripe account. We will need three settings from your Stripe account:
– A live publishable key (will start with “pk_live_”)
– A live secret key (will start with “sk_live_” or “rk_live_”)
– A webhook secret key
To get these values:
(1) You will need the exact URL for your Envelope Challenge portal. If we have not yet provided this to you, please email [email protected] before you begin.
(2) Log into your Stripe account.
(3) Go to Developer Tools (link is usually in top right corner)
(4) Follow the instructions here for “Reveal an API secret key for live mode (one time)”
^^ This is where you’ll find your live publishable key and the live secret key.
VERY VERY IMPORTANT: Stripe’s instruction “In Notes, enter where your key lives in your own systems” is unclear. What this means, in simpler terms, is that once you’ve viewed your secret key and copied it from this Dashboard, you’ll never be able to view it again. So, copy it and paste it somewhere secure (aka ‘where your key lives in your own systems’), and put that location in Notes to help you remember in case you forget. Do not rely on us to save your secret key.
(5) For the 3rd value, a webhook endpoint (https://envelopechallenge.org/yourenvelopechallengeportal/?wc-api=wc_stripe) needs to be added to your Stripe account settings to enable you to receive notifications. Replace ‘yourenvelopechallengeportal’ with the actual URL for your Envelope Challenge This is the URL you received from us in Step 1 above.
Follow these instructions through #6 in the top section, Add endpoint. Ignore everything after “Add endpoints with the API”):
Once your webhook endpoint has been set up, Stripe will create a value called the Webhook secret; we will need this value to allow your Envelope Challenge portal to communicate with your Stripe account.
(6) Send your live publishable key and the webhook secret to [email protected].
(7) Do NOT email the live secret key. Instead, either text it to Leslie Smith at 423-580-7678 (if you are on a Mac and can text from your computer, this is the easiest option) along with just your name – she can match it to your account – OR put it in a Google doc and share that with Leslie’s email address, [email protected]. We’ll copy it and delete it from the Google doc once your Envelope Challenge portal is working. (Again, please store this secret key in a different safe place; once we add it to your portal we will not be able to read it.)
